Animation is a super exciting industry where no two days of work will ever be the same! Here’s everything you should know about this super fun (albeit challenging) career path.
What is animation?
When we mention animation, you are probably imagining old Walt Disney sitting as his desk with a pencil and art pad, doodling pictures of Mickey Mouse.
Right?
Funnily enough, only a very small percentage of animators actually do any drawing at all!
As an animator, you would almost ALWAYS work as part of a team. There would be certain team members who are nifty with a pencil alright, but most of the job involves using animation software such as Adobe Director… And of course, scripting is an extremely important part of this process too!
Sounds like a fun job! What do I need to apply for the role?
It goes without saying that some degree of creativity is essential to work as an animator. In terms of formal qualifications, there are some really good courses that will help you to simultaneously learn and build your portfolio at the same time.

Animation Course QQI Level 6 (Cert) – Pulse College
A key part of this course involves producing a portfolio of work and developing entrepreneurship skills. These two key elements will help participants get into the exciting and growing Irish and international animation industry.
The course is one year in duration, and can be done through classroom-based learning, online, or a combination of the two!

Media B.A. Top-Up Degree in Animation – Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education
This Springboard course is a one year top-up degree programme in Animation (BA Hons) in conjunction with the University of Wolverhampton (UK).
You will be taught by industry professionals, with further visiting guest lecturers and workshops during the year. Access and facilities are provided to students to carry out project work in a dedicated studio.
The duration of the course is one year, with 12 hours of lectures per week (delivered over 3 evenings each week).
