Welcome to Back To Work Connect’s Reignite, Reskill & Recruit Audio Series. In this episode, Sarah Healy of Tools for Better is discussing training the team.

We’ve had the conversations about bias, about talent shortages, about DEI and building more inclusive workplaces and most organisations get it.

But what actually changes after the conversation?

Because awareness is one thing, changing how you hire is something else entirely.

At Back to Work Connect, we built our Returner Friendly Recruitment Training for exactly this reason — to help organisations move from intention to action.

We’ve kept it simple and practical, we focus on four areas that, when done well, genuinely shift outcomes:

1. Understanding Returners

Who they are, the value they bring, and why they’re critical to solving skills gaps and strengthening your DEI strategy.

(And yes — we tackle the misconceptions head-on.)

2. Identifying returner CVs

Looking beyond the “career gap” and actually understanding the experience, skills, and resilience behind it — without bias creeping in.

3. Encouraging returners through the hiring process

Equipping talent teams to advocate for returners, and bringing hiring managers on the journey so great candidates don’t get filtered out too early.

4. Creating a truly returner-friendly hiring process

Making the small but powerful changes across the entire journey that turn “we’re open to returners” into something real and visible.

Because this is the part that matters:

If your process doesn’t change, your outcomes won’t either.

Returner-friendly hiring isn’t a single initiative. It’s an end-to-end shift — and it requires everyone involved to understand their role in making it work.

That’s what we help organisations do.

Not just talk about inclusion — but actually build it into how they hire.
