Interested in a law career that doesn’t involve arguing with judges? Then being a legal secretary could be the job for you!
If you are interested in the legal profession, but don’t want to take centre stage in a courtroom, this is a fantastic career path option. Most of the important work that surrounds legal cases takes place away from the public eye, and as a legal secretary; you will be responsible for keeping a law firm’s affairs running smoothly.
Duties will include:
- Preparing correspondence
- Typing legal documents – motions, briefs, pleadings and legal invoices
- Researching and communicating with legal experts, vendors and other staff members.
- Producing legal documentation such as court papers, contracts and wills.
- Accompanying solicitors to police cells or the courtroom.
- Answering your employers’ telephone calls.
- Being in charge of petty cash while keeping a detailed record of costs.
- Making appointments for your employer.
- General administration work such as filing.
As a legal secretary, you will most likely work standard weekday hours and there may be part-time positions on offer for applicants seeking flexible hours. Although you will spend much of your working day in an office, there will be occasions when you travel to a police station or a court with a solicitor. However, don’t expect your courtroom visits to be as exciting as they look on TV!
