25 Days Back to Work Challenge

Rebuilding Confidence, One Step at a Time

There’s a moment many Returners and career changers know all too well. You start thinking about returning to work… and suddenly the doubts appear.

  • “Has too much time passed?”
  • “Would anyone hire me?”
  • “Do I still have valuable skills?”
  • “Where would I even begin?”

At Back To Work Connect, we work with Returners every day, and one thing has become very clear:

Most people do not lack ability. They lack confidence.

That’s exactly why we created the 25 Day Back to Work Challenge — a simple step-by-step journey designed to help Returners reconnect with their strengths, rebuild confidence, and take practical steps back towards the world of work.

Not through pressure, not through perfection, but through small manageable actions.

Week 1 — Reconnect With Yourself

The first week focused on self-reflection and confidence.

Because before someone updates a CV or applies for a role, they often need to reconnect with who they are and what they already bring.

Participants explored questions like:

  • What would your future self thank you for starting today?
  • What skills do you already use every day?
  • What experiences in life required resilience?
  • What did you do before your career break?
  • What strengths do other people see in you?

One of the biggest themes from Week 1 was recognising that a career break does not erase experience.

Many Returners have continued managing responsibilities, solving problems, supporting others, adapting, organising, and learning — even if those experiences didn’t happen in a formal workplace.

And those skills still matter.

Week 2 — Recognise Your Value

Week 2 focused on transferable skills and reframing the way Returners see themselves.

So often, people returning to work focus only on what they think they’ve “lost,” rather than recognising everything they still bring.

This week encouraged participants to reflect on:

  • the transferable skills they already have
  • the qualities people naturally seek them out for
  • achievements and personal wins
  • how they talk about their career break

One particularly powerful exercise involved rewriting the story people tell themselves.

Instead of:

“I’ve been out of work for years.”

Participants were encouraged to think differently:

“I took time away from formal employment while continuing to build valuable life and transferable skills.”

That shift may seem small — but confidence often begins with changing the narrative we carry about ourselves.

Week 3 — Re-enter The World of Work

By Week 3, the focus shifted towards practical action. This wasn’t about making huge leaps overnight. It was about rebuilding momentum.

Participants were encouraged to:

  • write down everything they managed during their time away from work
  • update one thing on LinkedIn or their CV
  • spend time exploring roles that genuinely interested them
  • apply for a role, even if they didn’t meet every requirement
  • practise explaining their career break confidently

One of the biggest mindset shifts this week was understanding that confidence rarely arrives before action.

More often, confidence is built through action.

Every application submitted.

Every profile updated.

Every role explored.

Every small step matters.

Week 4 — Take Action

The final week focused on visibility, connection, and recognising progress.

Participants were encouraged to:

  • learn something new
  • practise introducing themselves confidently
  • engage on LinkedIn
  • reconnect with former colleagues and contacts
  • reflect on how far they had already come

For many Returners, visibility can feel uncomfortable after time away from professional environments. But this week reminded participants that showing up does not need to be perfect or polished.

Sometimes visibility starts with:

  • a comment
  • a message
  • a conversation
  • a simple step forward

And often, that’s enough to create momentum.

At its core, the 25 Day Back to Work Challenge was never just about CVs or applications. It was about rebuilding belief. Because Returners and career changers are not starting from scratch.

They are returning with:

  • life experience
  • resilience
  • adaptability
  • emotional intelligence
  • transferable skills
  • perspective

And increasingly, these are exactly the qualities many employers need. The challenge also highlighted something we see every day at Back To Work Connect:

Confidence doesn’t usually return all at once; it rebuilds slowly through small actions, repeated consistently. This Is Only The Beginning

Whether someone:

  • updated their LinkedIn profile
  • recognised their transferable skills
  • applied for a role
  • attended a webinar

or simply started believing in themselves again…that progress matters.

Returning to work is not just a professional journey, for many people, it’s a personal one too and no one should have to navigate it alone.
