Roadmap – Prepare for Interviews

Turn your experience into confident interview answers.

Interviews can feel daunting, especially after time away from work. But remember, employers aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for people who can demonstrate experience, potential and a willingness to learn.

This roadmap will help you prepare for interviews with practical techniques, structured answers and the confidence to talk about your career journey.

Estimated time: Work through at your own pace (around 1 week)

Before You Begin

A reminder…

Feeling nervous before an interview is completely normal. Most people experience interview nerves, whether they’ve been working continuously or are returning after a career break. Preparation doesn’t remove nerves completely—but it gives you the confidence to manage them.

Remember:

✨You were invited because the employer already sees potential.

✨You don’t need to know every answer.

✨Interviews are conversations, not exams.

✨You’re also deciding whether the employer is right for you.

Confidence comes from preparation, not perfection.

✅ Step 1

Understand the STAR Technique

Many interview questions ask you to give a real example of how you’ve handled a situation in the past.

The STAR technique helps you structure your answer clearly:

S — Situation
T — Task
A — Action
R — Result

Preparing a few examples in advance can make interviews feel much less stressful.

✅ Step 2

Build Your STAR Story Bank

Prepare 5–6 examples that demonstrate different strengths.

Think about a time when you:

☐ Solved a problem
☐ Worked successfully with others
☐ Took the lead or showed initiative
☐ Managed competing priorities
☐ Adapted to change
☐ Learned something new

Remember, these examples don’t all have to come from paid employment. Volunteering, caring responsibilities, study and community work can all provide valuable examples.

One strong story can often answer several different interview questions. Change the part you emphasise depending on the competency you’re being asked about.

✅ Step 3

Prepare for Common Questions

Take time to practise answering some of the questions you’re most likely to be asked.

For example:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why are you interested in this role?
  • Tell me about a time you solved a problem.
  • What are your strengths?
  • Why did you take a career break?
  • Why are you returning now?

The goal isn’t to memorise answers—it’s to feel comfortable telling your story.

Interview Skills with Heather Thompson

In this 45-minute interactive workshop, Heather covers:

  • How to prepare for interviews in a structured way, including identifying your skills and building strong examples
  • Simple frameworks (including STAR) to help you answer questions clearly without over-rehearsing
  • What to do in the moment if you lose your train of thought, go blank, or need time to think
  • Practical ways to manage nerves and stay grounded before and during interviews
  • How to approach follow-up and reflect on your performance afterwards

✅ Step 4

Practise Explaining Your Career Break

One of the questions many Returners worry about is explaining time away from work.

Keep your explanation:

Honest ✔ | Brief ✔ | Positive ✔ | Forward-looking ✔

Try completing this sentence:

“I took a career break to ____________. During that time ____________. I’m now ready to return and excited to bring my experience in ____________ to my next role.”

Your career break doesn’t need to dominate the conversation. Answer the question confidently, then bring the conversation back to what you can offer now.

Focus on:

👉What you learned

👉The skills you developed

👉Why you’re excited to return

Remember, your career break is just one chapter of your career—not the whole story.

✅ Step 5

Practise Out Loud

Confidence grows with practice. Reading interview answers in your head isn’t the same as saying them out loud.

This week:

☐ Practise your 60-second introduction
☐ Say three STAR answers aloud
☐ Record one answer on your phone
☐ Practise with someone you trust
☐ Try answering a question you weren’t expecting

Practise your stories — don’t memorise a script.

✅ Step 6

Prepare for Interview Day

A little preparation can make a big difference.

Before your interview:

✔️ Research the employer; Read our Employer Spotlights

✔️ Read the job description again

✔️ Prepare two or three questions to ask

✔️ Plan your journey or test your technology

✔️ Lay out your clothes the night before

✔️ Give yourself plenty of time

✔️ The aim is to arrive feeling calm and prepared.

✔️Have a copy of your CV and the job description beside you

✔️Know the names/roles of the people interviewing you, if provided

Remember…

The interview starts before the first question.

A warm greeting, a genuine smile and a confident introduction all help create a positive first impression.

You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room. You simply need to be yourself and communicate the value you bring.

Before You Finish…

Can you now:

☐ Give a confident 60-second introduction?
☐ Explain your career break briefly and positively?
☐ Give at least 5 examples using STAR?
☐ Explain why you’re interested in the role?
☐ Name your key strengths?
☐ Ask the employer 2–3 good questions?
☐ Feel prepared for interview day?

You don’t need perfect answers. You need to know your experience well enough to talk about it naturally.
