{"id":7444,"date":"2026-10-21T13:10:34","date_gmt":"2026-10-21T13:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/careerhub\/?p=7444"},"modified":"2026-10-21T13:10:41","modified_gmt":"2026-10-21T13:10:41","slug":"where-do-i-fit-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/careerhub\/where-do-i-fit-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Where do I fit now?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 id=\"h-finding-the-connection-between-your-skills-and-what-employers-need\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding the connection between your skills and what employers need<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At our recent Back To Work Connect community event, \u201cWhere do I fit now?\u201d, career consultant Joanne Lee of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joanneleecoaching.com\/\">Joanne Lee Consulting<\/a> helped us explore a practical way forward: understanding where your interests and experience meet what employers need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session centred on three questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49What energises you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49What are you good at?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49What is the market looking for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding the overlap can help you make more informed decisions about your next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-start-with-curiosity-before-committing-to-a-course\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with curiosity, before committing to a course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you feel uncertain about your career, signing up for a course can feel like a positive move. It offers structure, a sense of progress and something new to put on your CV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before investing your time, energy and money, it helps to ask: what opportunities could this learning help me access?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following an interest is valuable. Understanding whether employers need those skills helps you turn that interest into a realistic career plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may discover that you need a particular qualification. You may find that a short refresher would be enough. Or you may realise that you already have much of what employers are looking for, but need help recognising and explaining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is to give your learning a clear purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-become-a-job-description-detective\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become a job description detective<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Joanne\u2019s most useful suggestions was to approach job advertisements as a source of information, before deciding whether to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose three to five advertisements for roles that interest you. Read beyond the job titles and look for clues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which skills appear repeatedly?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would the person actually spend their day doing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which requirements are essential, and which are described as desirable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What problems does the employer need this person to solve?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which tasks appeal to you, and which would you rather avoid?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the session, Joanne explored a business administrator advertisement, drawing attention to requirements such as organisation, customer focus, accuracy and the ability to learn quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps shift the question from \u201cHave I held this exact job title?\u201d to \u201cWhere have I demonstrated the skills this work requires?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also helps you spot patterns. If several roles mention maintaining accurate records, coordinating activities and communicating with customers, you have a clearer picture of the evidence to include in your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-give-yourself-a-fair-assessment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give yourself a fair assessment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long list of requirements can make it very easy to rule yourself out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, wording matters. Experience described as \u201can advantage, but not essential\u201d should be assessed differently from a mandatory qualification or professional registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to assume that every unfamiliar task makes you unsuitable. Equally, it is useful to recognise where a genuine gap needs attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try sorting the requirements into three groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can demonstrate this already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I have related experience that could transfer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I would need training or further experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives you something more useful than a quick yes or no: a realistic picture of your fit and what you might need next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the advertisement leaves important questions unanswered about hours, location, flexibility or duties, seek clarification where possible. An unclear job description can make it harder to assess a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-your-experience-deserves-a-closer-look\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your experience deserves a closer look<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joanne also encouraged attendees to think beyond their most recent paid role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous employment, volunteering, community involvement, caring responsibilities and other experiences may provide examples of skills relevant to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skills it may help demonstrate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping organise a community event<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planning, teamwork and communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordinating appointments and services for a family member<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organisation, record keeping and liaising with others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing a renovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Budgeting, scheduling and resolving problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning a new digital tool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Willingness to learn and practical problem-solving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detail matters. These activities do not automatically establish a professional qualification or specialist expertise, but they can provide useful evidence of particular skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask yourself: what did I personally do, how did I approach it, and what happened as a result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can draw on earlier career achievements too. A career break does not erase that experience. Consider which examples remain relevant and how you can demonstrate your current knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-build-a-bank-of-examples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build a bank of examples<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is much easier to tailor a CV or prepare for an interview when you already have examples to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joanne suggested creating a simple spreadsheet with three columns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Competency or skill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brain dump of examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A clear STAR story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Times you managed deadlines, records or competing priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One example explaining the situation, task, action and result<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Times you explained information, resolved confusion or supported someone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A specific example showing what you did and its outcome<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problem-solving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Times something went wrong and you found a way forward<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A concise account of the problem, your response and the result<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start with rough notes. You do not need polished answers immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then use the STAR method to structure your strongest examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Situation<\/strong>: What was happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Task:<\/strong> What needed to be done?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Action:<\/strong> What did you personally do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Result:<\/strong> What was the outcome?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A result does not always need a percentage or financial figure. It might be a deadline met, an issue resolved or a process made easier. Keep it specific and accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-talk-to-people-who-can-help-you-understand-the-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Talk to people who can help you understand the work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Job advertisements offer one view of the market. Conversations can help fill in the gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joanne encouraged attendees to think about people who know a sector, understand a role, have made a similar transition or could introduce them to someone useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to begin by asking for a job. Start with a question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m exploring a move into this area and would really value your perspective. What does the work involve, and which skills make the biggest difference?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other useful questions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has changed in this type of work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which qualifications are necessary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What routes do people take into the role?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What would you suggest I investigate before choosing a course?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aim for one useful conversation a week. Keep a short record of what you learn and any suggested next steps. Over time, those conversations can help you narrow your options and test your assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-use-the-employer-s-language-to-explain-your-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use the employer\u2019s language to explain your experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you understand the skills a role requires, make the connection clear in your CV, LinkedIn profile and application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an employer asks for coordination, customer communication or accurate record keeping, explain where you have done those things, using relevant examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means choosing clear, familiar wording that helps the reader understand your experience. Copying keywords without supporting evidence will not tell your story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your CV easy to navigate, with clear headings, straightforward formatting and attention to the application instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-human-skills-still-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human skills still matter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology featured in our discussion, but so did the value of human skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Economic Forum\u2019s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies analytical thinking, resilience, leadership and creative thinking among employers\u2019 core skills, alongside empathy, active listening and lifelong learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Returners and career changers, this is a useful prompt to look carefully at the experience you already bring, while identifying any technical or professional learning your chosen direction requires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-your-next-step-gather-evidence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your next step: gather evidence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to work out your entire future this week.
