You may have an inclusive recruitment policy. You may actively encourage applications from people of different backgrounds. You may even have strong diversity and inclusion commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if an experienced professional has been out of the workplace for five or ten years, would they know you want them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the question behind the new Back To Work Connect Returner-Friendly Recruitment Check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For people returning to work after a career break, deciding whether to apply for a role isn’t always simply about having the right skills or experience. They may also be asking themselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will my career break count against me? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is my experience still considered relevant? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am I too old to start again? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this employer really mean people like me when they talk about inclusion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, an employer can be doing many of the right things and still unintentionally send signals that discourage an experienced Returner from applying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why we’ve developed our Returner-Friendly Recruitment Check.<\/p>\n\n\n

Rather than looking at recruitment purely from an employer’s point of view, we ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does a Returner see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Check looks at five key areas.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. VISIBLE \u2014 Can Returners see themselves working here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An organisation may have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, but does its careers messaging make it clear that experienced professionals returning after a career break are welcome?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visibility matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Returners don’t see people with similar experiences represented in your recruitment messaging \u2014 or never see career breaks mentioned \u2014 they may simply assume your opportunities aren’t intended for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. ACCESSIBLE \u2014 Can Returners confidently apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Returner may have 10, 15 or 20 years of valuable professional experience behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But requirements for “recent experience”, long lists of essential criteria or a very traditional description of the ideal candidate can cause someone returning after several years away to rule themselves out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returner-Friendly recruitment helps candidates recognise where their existing skills and experience could fit, rather than focusing solely on how recently those skills were used. This is one of the central questions within the BTWC framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. INCLUSIVE \u2014 Do you recognise different career journeys?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Careers aren’t always linear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People step away from employment for many reasons. They raise families, care for relatives, relocate, retrain or simply reach a stage in life where they want to change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of that automatically erases the experience they gained beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inclusive recruitment recognises transferable skills, previous experience and non-linear career paths rather than assuming the strongest candidate will always have followed an uninterrupted career journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. FAIR \u2014 Can a career gap become a barrier?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps one of the most important questions employers can ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is a candidate being assessed on their ability to do the job \u2014 or could the fact that they haven’t done that job recently influence how their application is viewed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a Returner, there is an enormous difference between being asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What have you done for the last five years?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Tell us about the experience and skills you could bring to this role.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Returner-Friendly recruitment process allows candidates to be assessed on the value of their skills and experience, rather than simply how recently they acquired them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. CONNECTED \u2014 Are you actively reaching Returner talent?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being open to Returners and actively trying to reach them are two very different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returner-Friendly employers create opportunities for experienced professionals to discover their organisation, understand their culture and learn about their opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That might mean changing recruitment messaging. It might mean sharing employee stories, engaging directly with Returner communities or promoting vacancies through specialist channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The important thing is making the invitation visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being inclusive isn’t always the same as being Returner-Friendly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An organisation can genuinely believe in inclusive recruitment and still have blind spots when it comes to career breaks. Often, the changes required aren’t enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step is simply looking at your recruitment from a different perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would a Returner know you want them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
