At our recent <strong>Interview Skills Workshop <\/strong>with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesuccesscoach.ie\/\">Heather Thompson<\/a> and hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/\">Back to Work Connect<\/a>, we focused on something that often gets overlooked: confidence isn\u2019t just about preparation, it\u2019s about how you manage yourself in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Gina, founder of Back to Work Connect and career coach Heather, the session brought together midlife Returners navigating that all-important next step. Here are the key takeaways that stood out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-not-just-what-you-know-it-s-how-you-show-up\">It\u2019s Not Just What You Know\u2014It\u2019s How You Show Up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather framed interview success around three simple but powerful qualities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Calm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confident<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capable<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people focus heavily on capability\u2014skills, experience, qualifications. But interviews are equally about how those strengths come across. Nerves can easily mask ability, which is why managing them is just as important as preparing answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A simple but effective starting point? <strong>Box breathing<\/strong>\u2014a technique used to steady your mind and body before (and even during) an interview. It\u2019s a reminder that confidence is something you can actively create, not something you either have or don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-8-step-preparation-framework\">The 8-Step Preparation Framework<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation matters. Heather shared a practical 8-step checklist that gives structure without overwhelm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research the company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand the role clearly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Match your skills to the job requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare specific examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan logistics (timing, location, tech setup)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare thoughtful questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose appropriate attire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review your CV thoroughly<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>What resonated most with participants was the emphasis on <strong>transferable skills<\/strong>. Your experience doesn\u2019t need to come from a traditional career path to be valuable. Skills built through parenting, volunteering, education, or life challenges are not \u201cextra\u201d\u2014they\u2019re relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-star-method-turning-experience-into-impact\">The STAR Method: Turning Experience into Impact<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most practical tools covered was the <strong>STAR method<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Situation<\/strong> \u2013 Set the context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Task<\/strong> \u2013 Explain your responsibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Action<\/strong> \u2013 Describe what you did<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Result<\/strong> \u2013 Share the outcome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a simple structure, but it transforms answers from vague to compelling. Instead of saying \u201cI\u2019m good at communication,\u201d you show it through a real example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key insight here: <strong>prepare a bank of stories in advance<\/strong>. When you\u2019ve already reflected on your experiences, you\u2019re far less likely to freeze under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managing-nerves-in-the-moment\">Managing Nerves in the Moment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with preparation, interviews can throw curveballs. The workshop focused on practical ways to stay grounded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Controlled breathing to regulate stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical grounding techniques (like steady posture or slowing your speech)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking a moment before answering\u2014silence is not your enemy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These aren\u2019t just \u201cnice to have\u201d tricks, they\u2019re what allow your preparation to actually come through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-handling-difficult-and-unexpected-questions\">Handling Difficult and Unexpected Questions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants raised honest, real-world concerns\u2014what if you\u2019re asked something inappropriate? What about second interviews? Screening calls?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather\u2019s advice was refreshingly direct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If a question feels inappropriate, you can <strong>challenge it or redirect it<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep bringing your answers back to your <strong>skills and suitability<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treat every stage (even informal calls) as part of the interview process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also discussion around upcoming <strong>EU pay transparency changes<\/strong>, which will shift how and when salary conversations happen, another reminder that the interview landscape is evolving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bigger-takeaway\">The Bigger Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What came through most strongly is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t need to become someone else to succeed in interviews.
