But in reality, it\u2019s far more subtle\u2014and far more common. It shows up in everyday decisions. In hiring. In performance reviews. In how we perceive people before we\u2019ve even had a real conversation. And most importantly, it\u2019s usually unconscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/careerhub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Reignite-Reskill-Recruit_-Bias-in-the-workplace.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-hidden-impact-of-bias\">The Hidden Impact of Bias<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bias is not about bad intent. It\u2019s about learned assumptions. Over time, we all develop mental shortcuts to make decisions quickly. But in the workplace, those shortcuts can quietly influence outcomes in ways we don\u2019t realise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most common types of bias include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Affinity bias \u2013 favouring people who are similar to us<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirmation bias \u2013 looking for evidence that supports what we already believe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Halo or horns effect \u2013 letting one trait define our entire perception of someone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stereotyping \u2013 making assumptions based on age, appearance, or background<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proximity bias \u2013 favouring those we see more often (especially relevant in hybrid work)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recency bias \u2013 prioritising recent experience over overall capability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Individually, these may seem small. But together, they shape who gets hired, who gets overlooked, and who gets the opportunity to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-this-matters-for-returners\">Why This Matters for Returners<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Returners, people re-entering the workforce after a career break\u2014are particularly impacted by these biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A gap on a CV can trigger assumptions. Age can influence expectations. Outdated perceptions can overshadow real capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, Returners often bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resilience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transferable skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A high level of motivation to contribute<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When bias goes unchallenged, businesses don\u2019t just exclude people, they miss out on real value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-business-case-for-change\">The Business Case for Change<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing bias isn\u2019t just the right thing to do, it\u2019s a smart business decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations that actively work to reduce bias:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Access a broader and more diverse talent pool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve decision-making and innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen employee engagement and retention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build a more inclusive and adaptable culture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s talent market, overlooking skilled professionals simply isn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-moving-from-unconscious-to-conscious\">Moving from Unconscious to Conscious<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal isn\u2019t perfection, it\u2019s awareness.
