{"id":4100,"date":"2022-12-19T12:35:05","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T12:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/?p=4100"},"modified":"2022-12-19T12:35:08","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T12:35:08","slug":"women-returners-the-solution-to-stem-diversity-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/backtoworkconnect.ie\/careerhub\/women-returners-the-solution-to-stem-diversity-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Women returners: the solution to STEM diversity challenges?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Returning to work following a career break can be a daunting experience for anyone.&nbsp;More support is needed to assist women re-entering the workplace.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Refreshing resumes, relearning or readjusting to processes, reforming relationships \u2014 it can all weigh heavily on our physical and mental health.&nbsp;But imagine, in addition to this, you\u2019re also presented with misconceptions, conscious and unconscious bias and stigma \u2013 all based on a gap in your CV.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, this is the stark reality for many women returning to the STEM workforce today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stem-skills-shortage\"><strong>STEM skills shortage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a talent and diversity gap in the STEM industry, with employers crying out for highly-skilled, diverse talent. It\u2019s a candidate-driven market for sure. However, unfortunately, for women returners, it\u2019s not as simple as filling out an application form.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve heard far too many stories of highly qualified and skilled women professionals locked out of roles and dismissed or overlooked during the initial screening process. In fact, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemreturners.com\/the-stem-returners-index-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021 STEM Returners Index,<\/a>&nbsp;23% of women surveyed said they had personally experienced bias in the recruitment process due to their gender, compared to 8% of men.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemreturners.com\/the-stem-returners-index-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021 STEM Returners Index,<\/a>&nbsp;23% of women surveyed said they had personally experienced bias in the recruitment process due to their gender, compared to 8% of men.&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-career-break-penalty\"><strong>The career break \u201cpenalty\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Women returning to work can face a \u2018career break penalty\u201d and be labelled as \u201crisky candidates\u201d by employers and recruiters. There is a perception that returners require special attention or hand-holding or that a career break automatically deteriorates skills. But the reality is that many women on a career break stay informed of what\u2019s happening in their industry and often develop new transferable skills that bring value and a fresh perspective to organisations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calling-for-change\"><strong>Calling for change&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to do things differently to address the gender imbalance within STEM and challenge biased methods that exclude or disadvantage women returners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must call on organisations to establish inclusive recruitment processes, encourage employers to view CV \u201cgaps\u201d differently and increase the percentage of women returners in mid-senior level STEM positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Back to Work Connect, our mission is to empower and support women ready to renter the workforce.
