And not only that, but horticulture also\nplays an integral part in our economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According\nto Bord Bia, the horticulture sector in Ireland is estimated to have an annual\nfarmgate value of \u20ac380 million and employs over 6,000 people in full-time,\npart-time or seasonal positions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Opportunities in Horticulture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Along\nwith green fingers, a passion for plants, great work ethic, stamina and\nwillingness to work outdoors in all weathers, a successful career in\nhorticulture requires bucketfuls of resilience, creativity and curiosity. And,\nof course, a love of what you do! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From working with plants, designing and\nbuilding landscapes, to developing new food products, horticulture can be\nextremely rewarding. There are many career options to suit various interests,\nskills and backgrounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Generally speaking, there are two main\nareas within the horticulture sector: amenity\nand commercial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amenity:<\/strong>\nThis includes landscape design and constructing and maintaining parks, public\nareas, sports grounds, recreation facilities and roadsides. Interior\nlandscaping is also a popular choice within amenity horticulture which involves\ndesigning, installing, and maintaining greenery in public spaces such as\nshopping centres, hotels, residences, etc. Typical employers within this sector\ninclude local authorities, botanic gardens, leisure facilities etc.\nSelf-employment is also a popular choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commercial:<\/strong>\nThis involves growing crops and greenery for sale. Crops include fruit and\nvegetables, nursery stock and bedding plants. Typical employers include\norganisations that grow or supply produce, production nurseries, and food\ncompanies that process and package fresh produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The growing horticulture sector can also\nlead to exciting self-employment opportunities. Landscaping, floristry,\ne-commerce and garden design are popular options for those craving flexibility\nand variety in their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And depending on the services you offer,\nyou may not require a huge investment to get started. In fact, for many\nstarting, resources can be as little as a car and a few hand tools. Larger\nequipment such as lawnmowers and hedge trimmers can also be hired in the\ninitial stages until you\u2019re ready to invest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
