What do you want to be when you grow up?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you were a child, you were probably\nasked \u201cWhat do you want to be when you grow up?\u201d and you no doubt answered with\nyour chosen career: a nurse perhaps, or an astronaut, or maybe even a famous\nsinger. As a child, you probably believed that you would choose one job and\nstay in that job for the rest of your life. But real life, and the modern\nworld, is a very different place. These days there are a multitude of different\nreasons why you might choose to switch directions or need to re-enter the\nworkforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can speak from personal experience when I\nsay that I know it can be a daunting prospect. It often feels as though you\nonly hear from two different ends of the spectrum. One friend tells you that\nshe went back to work, started her own company and now brings in a fortune. Meanwhile\nanother friend says that he\u2019s desperately trying to go back to work but can\u2019t\nsee a way forward. The reality, at least for myself, lies somewhere in the\nmiddle. Going back to work can be a challenge but it is certainly not an\ninsurmountable one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of positivity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you are looking for a new job, staying\npositive is probably one of the hardest things to do but, in my opinion, the\nmost important! When my youngest child was a toddler, I was really struggling\nto find a job that would fit around my existing responsibilities. Around that\ntime, I happened to mention to a new friend at a playgroup that I was working\non an interesting project as a volunteer at a performance arts venue. A few\nmonths later, when a role became available in her team, she remembered our\nconversation and put my name forward for the job. It was a wonderful\nopportunity with flexible hours and the option of working from home. After an\ninterview, I was offered the role and ended up working for that company for a\nnumber of years! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not for one moment stating that you\nshould treat every conversation as an interview, but it does show that it’s worth\nkeeping your mind open to possibilities. During the interview for that role,\nthe company had already heard all about my volunteering project and it was a\ngreat conversation starter. I know that volunteering can be difficult if you\nhave caring responsibilities but I\u2019ve always found it to be a great way of\nkeeping my CV up to date and meeting potential employers. Some volunteering\nroles can even be done online so it is definitely worth seeing what\nopportunities are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be open to learning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s also important to show prospective\nemployers that you\u2019re willing to learn so take full advantage of wonderful\nwebsites like Back to Work Connect which offer valuable support and guidance as\nyou return to the workforce. As a stay-at-home parent to my two young children,\nI wanted to study and keep my mind active but without spending too much money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately there are a huge number of\nwebsites offering free courses from respected universities; refreshing your\nskills will not only make you more attractive to potential employers but also\ngive you a confidence boost. It is also worth seeing if you have any friends or\nacquaintances to partner with on a skills exchange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, we moved to Paris and I\nreally wanted to learn French, both to help integrate and to improve my job prospects.\nAfter asking around, I was introduced to a budding actor who wanted to improve\nher English and so each week we met for a coffee, one week she would teach me\nFrench and then next I would help her to improve her English – not only was it\nfun and free but I can now put a more advanced language level on my CV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming back stronger and wiser<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going back to work after some time away can\nbe frustrating, especially if you were in a senior role before and you\u2019re now\nbeing expected to prove yourself again. However, I\u2019ve found that people who\u2019ve\ntaken some knocks are often some of the most inspirational and interesting\npeople to work with. Through living abroad I\u2019ve met many people who\u2019ve used an\ninternational move to change direction in their career or, in some cases, even\nstart something completely new! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawyers have become photographers,\nacademics have retrained as translators and stay at home parents have worked\ntheir way back up to become business directors. I know that it hasn\u2019t always\nbeen plain sailing and they\u2019ve no doubt experienced more than their fair share\nof difficulties. However, these challenges have given them a unique creativity\nand approach to problem-solving which means that they\u2019re often successful in\ntheir ventures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you\u2019ve taken a few knocks or received a few of those dreaded rejection letters, give yourself some time to wallow then come back again, stronger and wiser and even more determined to succeed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
