In this episode,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahhealy1\/\">Sarah Healy<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/toolsforbetter.com\/\">Tools for Better<\/a>\u00a0is discussing combatting bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest \u2014 bias isn\u2019t the problem, unexamined bias is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every single one of us has bias. It\u2019s how our brains are wired. We categorise, we filter, we lean towards what feels familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because what feels \u201cfamiliar\u201d is often just a reflection of our own world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The people we grew up around, the environments we\u2019ve worked in, the experiences we\u2019ve had and if we\u2019re not careful, we end up hiring more of the same \u2014 not because it\u2019s the best talent, but because it feels like the safest choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows up everywhere in recruitment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 How we read a CV with a career gap<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Who we feel is a \u201cgood fit\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The assumptions we make in interviews<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The candidates we unconsciously filter out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s the challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t fix bias by telling people \u201cdon\u2019t be biased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You fix it by building awareness and changing behaviour \u2014 consistently, across the entire hiring process. That\u2019s exactly why we built our Returner Friendly Recruitment Training at Back to Work Connect. Because Returners often sit outside what feels \u201cfamiliar\u201d in hiring. And unless teams are equipped to recognise and challenge their own assumptions, incredible talent gets missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we focus on is simple (but not easy):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Helping teams understand how bias actually works<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Creating space to challenge assumptions safely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Giving practical tools to assess candidates more fairly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Aligning everyone involved in hiring \u2014 not just HR<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because inclusive hiring isn\u2019t about removing bias completely, it\u2019s about not letting it make your decisions for you and when you get that right, you don\u2019t just build more diverse teams, you make better hiring decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for listening to Back To Work Connects Reignite, Reskill, and Recruit audio series.
